Robots are coming into our social and home life. In California they want to set up Taxi robots to serve customers’ requests by lowering the price of racing.

How robots affect our lives

The US Department of Motor Vehicles is reviewing the legislation to authorize road tests of self-driving vehicles. In fact, it will give the go-ahead for paid driverless transport, which could already be a reality in June 2018.

When it comes to technological innovation, California is always at the forefront. It is not surprising, therefore, that here the first taxi service without a driver on board could arise. That’s right, because the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DVM) is studying a change to the regulation on self-driving cars.

And this is not just a simple announcement, since a draft of the new rules that allow circulation to taxi-robots has already been announced and could come into force also for June 2018. Or even before, if the process will travel fast: from the diffusion of the draft (Wednesday 11 October) follow 15 days of public debate before the drafting of the definitive regulation (by the end of 2017) and its conversion according to law by the legislative body. That will take place at the latest by June 2018.

In short, those who will travel to California on vacation next summer could find several on the roads. Also because, as the newspaper The Mercury News of San Jose explains, today there are 42 companies that have the license to test self-driving technology, and 285 vehicles with autopilot in circulation. Numbers that, with the possible green light to self-driving taxis, are destined to grow.

Currently the rules provide that the self driving cars in circulation must have a technician seated in place of the driver, able to intervene if something does not work as it should. But the modifications could make this precaution unnecessary, “softening” also the modalities with which the tests are carried out with the introduction of the advance notification to the local authorities by the operators on the route and date of the road tests, with the abolition of the obligation to request the relevant permits. In short, they are serious in California.

More and more often people, having less time available, buy robots for household cleaning or household chores, as companies are beginning to choose robots for some types of work that do not need a human being or require action repetitive.

This is not a wrong situation, provided that we understand that human beings will always be indispensable to society, and that in the event that robots will replace human labor, we must also change the structure of society in which we live, this not to bring social injustice to those who find themselves without a job.
