Huawei launches the pro P20: 3 artificial intelligence cameras from 899 euros or 362.94 pounds.
New Huawei P20 Pro
Huawei focuses on three cameras for the new P20 Pro, the expected heir of the P10 – not called P11, but the numerical progression in the evolution of smartphone models is experiencing a decidedly non-arithmetic dynamic, just think of the iPhone 6, 7, 8 …. X. The photographic segment is thus confirmed as one of the most important areas of comparison between advanced phones and the P20 will compare with Samsung S9 and iPhone X. The Parisian presentation focuses on the performance of the camera of the new smartphones compared to the 2 competitors: the CEO Huawei consumer group, Richard Yu, shows shots in various conditions, from darkness to movement, emphasizing the primacy of the P20 and especially P20 Pro, and showing the first and second place obtained by the two smartphones in the ranking of Dxomark.
Much emphasis also on artificial intelligence, which finds its main application right in the camera and its engine in the Kirin 970 processor, the one designed for the artificial intelligence that debuted in Mate 10. Confirmed also the partnership with Leica for the development of lenses , a collaboration that has been going on since the P9 and therefore for two years.
Prices (the Mate with Porsche exceeds 2 thousand euros)
The P20 has a 5.8-inch display and dual camera, the P 20 Pro, with 6.1 inches, has 3 cameras. On sale today. Both have a fingerprint reader combined with the ability to unlock the phone with face recognition from the front camera. The design traces the iPhone X, especially in the upper part due to the presence of the notch, the top bezel where there are sensors for the camera “dug” in the display. With the exception of Samsung, the notch one is becoming a design trend. There is also a model developed with Porsche (Mate RS) that has several technological goodies, including the double fingerprint reader: a front on the screen – the first of its kind in Europe – and a rear one. Ben 512 gig.
Huawei P20 Pro technical features
As for the P 20 Pro, the photographic sector is inspired by the SLR world and wants to make a further leap in quality. The main rear camera has a 40 megapixel rgb sensor and lens with f / 1.8 f aperture, a 20 mega monochrome sensor with f / 1.6 aperture and an 8 mega sensor with f / 2.4 aperture. The lenses are Vario-Summilux with 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, 10x digital zoom plus a 1 / 1.7-inch image sensor (about 7.76mm x 5.82mm) to capture images with low light (ISO 102400).
Display amoled GorillaGlass 5, format 19: 9, resolution 2240×1080, 408 ppi. Android 8.1 operating system, with Emui 8.1 interface. On stage Sebastian Missoffe, head of Google in France, shows the integration between the hardware and Google Assistant and several augmented reality applications born from the work of developers on the kit made available to them by the Californian company. Memory: 6 gig of ram, 128 of storage. 4000 mAh battery.
The P20 is instead an evolution of the P10: dual Leica camera with a 12 megapixel sensor with a size of 1.55 μm and a 20 mega monochromatic sensor. Both phones have a 24-megapixel front camera, which with AI software adjusts colors and details to make the selfie more realistic. A mode similar to that of iPhone X, complete with filters. Battery in this case from 3400 mAh, more than Samsung’s S9 and iPhone X, emphasizes Huawei.
Much of what the phone does in terms of AI on the images is based on the processing capability of the Kirin 970 processor with a dedicated Neural Network Processing Unit (Npu). This allows you to identify 19 different scenarios based on the recognition of the scene and objects. And set the relevant settings, something similar to what is seen with Lg V30 as the last software update. A novelty is the predictive 4D focus. Basically, the camera predicts the movements of objects, after identifying them, and tightens on them more effectively to capture moving details. For example, a flower moved by the wind. There are also a series of suggestions for group photos and landscapes. And an optical stabilization for night photos even without the use of a tripod. This also applies to videos: the P20 allows slow motion 960 fps, like the Samsung S9.
The moment of Huawei
Huawei is today the number 3 in the world in smartphones, behind Samsung and Apple. In the first historical drop in the market photographed by Gartner in February (-5.6% in the fourth quarter), the Chinese group is the only one that has increased sales: according to the latest global data, Samsung now has 18.2%, Apple 17.9% and Huawei 10.8. The difficulties are, if anything, in the United States, where based on the security concerns of the Trump, FBI and Cia administration compared to the Chinese company, the main operators have stopped selling Huawei’s flagship products. They are found online and in some chains, but now Best Buy has decided not to offer it to the public.
Trump’s fears and Google’s collaboration
Richard Yu opened the presentation in Paris, underlining Huawei’s 153 million smartphone sales in 2017: “Nobody knew us seven years ago, today we are one of the best known brands in the world”. The CEO has highlighted the investments for 10.4 billion dollars of research per year, “the sixth company in the world. Every year our investment in research and development grows by 30% “he continued. The head of Google in France Sebastian Missoffe underlines the strong collaboration between the company and Huawei, which in effect strides with the “American ban”, also linked to the fear of losing the opportunity of 5G, since Huawei wants to be the first company to bring a smartphone with integrated 5G module next year.
