The latest offer of Moto Mods is a feature Polaroid printer that allows you to print small photos directly from your smartphone.
Polaroid Insta-Share Printer
Motorola expands its range of Moto Mods, the modular accessories that enhance the Moto Z series of smartphones, turning them into portable projectors, JBL speakers, Hasselblad cameras and even Polaroid printers.
Who remembers the instant camera with self-developing films? If you have a few years you will certainly remember it, so iconic that the very name Polaroid has become synonymous with the product.
Motorola wants to capture the charm of that product with the Moto Mods “Polaroid Insta-Share Printer”, ie a printer that allows you to take a picture and, in a few seconds, to print it.
How the Motorola Moto Mods is made
With a thickness of a couple of centimeters and a weight of 188 grams, it is certainly not an accessory that goes unnoticed. It connects, as usual, to the back of the smartphone via magnetic media. But it does not cover the smartphone for the whole length, in fact it gets thinner in the area of the camera, which will be seen from a hole, once installed.
This module only integrates the printer, and does not replace the camera, but a button in the upper edge can be used to take a picture. All in all, once mounted, it also offers a more secure grip of the smartphone, which can be used more easily even to take pictures.
Inside hides not only the printer, but also a battery, which must be recharged via a USB-C port on the back, together with a press button that turns on four LEDs to indicate the state of charge. One charge is enough to print about 20 photos.
The upper surface is removed to allow the insertion of the special paper that will be used for printing.
Zero Ink technology
The ZINK printing technology (Zero Ink) does not require, like the classic inkjet printers, a cartridge containing colors, a print head and the paper to store the colors on. All you need is already present inside the films that are used to print the photo.
These films are made up of different layers that contain the primary colors, which mixed together make up the image. To “awaken” the colors and compose the image, the film is stimulated by heating it, and modulating the intensity of the applied heat. In this way you can control the amount of ink needed for each layer by composing the desired image.
It is not really a Polaroid
Despite the Polaroid brand, and the name “insta-share”, it does not create instant photos. It behaves like a normal printer, so you can certainly take a picture and print it immediately, but you can also choose the photo to print from the library, or edit the photo you just took before printing it.
The beauty of the old Polaroid was to capture the moment, a philosophy also followed by modern digital instant cameras: you take a picture and print, without any chance to see the final result on a screen first. Grimaces or closed eyes were part of the game, and it was also a bit of the beauty of that concept, which stopped time in a natural and genuine way.
Smartphone application for Polaroid
The application is essential. In the screen that will appear in front of you will have only two choices: activate the camera to take a picture or select an image from the gallery (or one from the selection of photos that you have already printed).
Along the bottom edge are the icons of Facebook, Instagram and Google. If you click on it, and log in, you can tap directly on the images on those platforms.
After selecting the photo, it will appear in a frame of the same proportions as the print paper, and you can interact with the image by enlarging or shrinking it, and rotating it, so as to compose the photo as you see fit.
Other tools just below allow you to activate an “Instagram” effect, change the brightness, contrast or saturation. You can also apply a frame, insert a “sticker” or text. In practice, everything that is usually done today on a social network.
When the image is to your liking, you can click on print and wait a few seconds for the realization.
The printed photographs have a dimension of 2×3 “, that is, about 7×5 cm.The print quality is far from that which can be obtained from a photographic studio, at least as regards the color rendering. If the idea of Polaroid brings the mind to the past, the same happens with the quality of the print.
The level of detail we can consider it good, after all, but the colors are a bit ‘off, and as a result we have images a bit’ flat. Among the Moto Mods is certainly the most particular, but perhaps even the most difficult to judge. If you have a friend or a friend who is passionate about photography, who love being with friends and family, and fill the smartphone with memories, then they will greatly appreciate this product.
A photo taken and printed during a particular event, stored in the wallet or attached to the refrigerator, or hidden in a diary, can gain a priceless sentimental value.
You must be lucky enough that this person also owns a Moto Z. The cost of each individual print is about 50 cents, for example if you buy the pack of 50 sheets about 25 euro. The photographic quality, as mentioned, is not up to a classic printer, but in a situation like the one described a little while ago, it will probably be more that is sufficient, since it will count much more than what the photo will represent, rather than the image itself.
For all the others, which we imagine are the majority, Motorola has other Moto Mods able to meet the most diverse and less specific needs of the Polaroid Insta Share Printer.
